Aldactone belongs to a group of medicines called ‘diuretics’ – you may know these as ‘water’ tablets. You may have gone to your doctor because you had swollen ankles or were short of breath. This can happen when your heart's pumping action has become weak because of too much fluid in your body. This is called 'congestive heart failure'. Pushing extra fluid around your body means your heart has to work harder. Your doctor has given you Aldactone to help you lose the extra fluid from your body. This will mean your heart has to do less work. You lose the extra fluid as urine, so you may need to go to the toilet more often while you are taking Aldactone.

Aldactone (Fluoxetine) is used to treat high blood pressure and relieve edema (swelling) caused by heart or kidney problems. It works by blocking the action of a chemical in the body that causes swelling and fluid retention. High blood pressure is a marker of cardiovascular disease and can increase the risk of stroke, heart attack and death. Aldactone can also be used to treat hyperkalemia, a condition in which potassium is increased by the body’s cells called K+) secretion. This condition occurs due to excessive production of unneeded potassium by the cells. By relaxing the blood vessels, Aldactone helps to relieve this unbalanced condition and improve heart function and blood pressure. It is important to take Aldactone as directed by your doctor, particularly for older adults or those with kidney problems. Dosage information for Aldactone can be found on the product insert. It is usually taken orally once a day. Avoid consuming alcohol as it can reduce the effectiveness of Aldactone. Consult your doctor or pharmacist if any side effects are observed. Aldactone is available in different strengths including 25mg, 50mg, and 100mg. The dosage and length of treatment depends on the condition being treated. Your doctor may recommend adjusting the dosage under medical guidance if needed. Aldactone is available as an oral tablet. Aldactone is usually taken once a day. We understand that you may have a lot of questions about starting a new medication and whether it will work or help you feel better. You’re not alone; many patients feel the same way.
There are many different factors that influence how well you respond to a medication. Keep in mind that some medications work better for certain people than others, and that’s because each person is different—genetics, age, and gender, among other differences—all affect how someone responds to treatment. Other factors such as underlying health conditions, other medications, and dietary considerations can also play a role in how a medication works.

It’s important to understand the different factors that influence how Aldactone works. Aldactone is a type of medication called a diuretic (a medicine thattic works by increasing urine production) and it reduces swelling and fluid loss caused by hypertension (high blood pressure). This makes it an effective treatment for mild to moderate hypertension. Aldactone also has a low level of a Potassium-sparing Diuretic (water pill) that can help treat heart failure (the shortness of breath or chest pain caused by fluid retention).
If you’re taking Aldactone and your health care provider is qualified to evaluate your medication, we invite them to review your health history and, if the provider is, a medication review will determine the appropriate dose and duration of the medication. You should not take Aldactone more often than every 3 to 6 weeks, and blood tests can tell your heart of how well your body processes Aldactone.
It can take 3 to 6 months for your body to see the effects of Aldactone’s effects. You can take Aldactone with or without food ( misconception that taking it with food changes how food works), but it can work for a change in your fluid retention. It can be taken every day at a different time of the day to allow for easier access to your body.
Remember, your response to Aldactone may be different from someone else’s response. If you want the best treatment for your needs but are not finding it effective but still have symptoms of mild hypertension, talk to your provider.
